It’s almost summer! If you’re anything like the KINETIC team, we have been pushing ourselves hard to get ready for all of the outdoor excitement that summer brings.

For a lot of us, the change in the seasons means a great opportunity to get outdoors for our workout sessions. There are challenges with that, as anyone opting to take their workout outside knows. Sunburn, dehydration, cramping, heat stroke – the list goes on.

With that in mind, we’ve compiled some of our bests bets for staying safe while working out outdoors, so you can maximize your workout and not your sunburn!

  • Make it Mornings
This may seem like the more obvious choice, but a lot of us struggle to get up earlier than usual to workout. But for those of you intrigued by this idea, did you know that your body temperature is actually lower in the morning than the afternoon? You might get your sweat on, but not too overheated.
  • Sunblock. Sunblock. Sunblock.
Did we mention Sunblock? There are a lot of options out there, but it’s vital that you get something with a high SPF that also is designed for a “sport” application. This is important, because that means the makers designed it to stick to your skin even while you’re sweating.
  • Hydrate!
We’ve already covered the importance of hydration in a previous blog post, so you should already be up on the in’s-and-out’s of why you need to be very focused on staying hydrated while working out. That being said, hydration is the easiest way to keep your body temperature regulated while working out in the heat.
  • Breathable Workout Gear
That cotton t-shirt that’s your favorite to wear to the gym? Probably not the best option for when you’re running outside in the heat. This is when making an investment in actual exercise clothing will really come in handy. A majority of exercise clothes are made of wicking materials, which will wick away sweat and allow your skin to better cool your body.
  • Limit Sun Exposure
This one may seem obvious, but for people just getting started with working out in warm weather outside, it’s a new concept. Finding shady spots to do push ups and burpees can go a long way to keeping you in the safe zone while burning calories.

The more you take your workout outside in warm weather, the more your body will adjust. In fact, studies have shown that by working out in warm weather, the effects of properly adjusting to heat (lowered heart rate and body temperature, and more) will stick with you even when the temperature drops.

The best thing we can recommend is you gradually bump up the amount of time spent working out in the outdoors, to keep things in a safe zone. But if you follow these simple tips, you’ll be in great shape right from the start!

With all of this information on-hand, it couldn’t be easier to get started working out when the temperature rises!
