Irvine Company is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability and compliance with environmental laws. This includes California’s Senate Bill (SB) 1383, which went into effect January 1, 2022 and is part of broader efforts to reduce organic waste in landfills within the state.

About SB 1383

Different types of organic waste — biodegradable materials that either come from a plant or an animal — make up half of the total waste in California’s landfills. As these organic materials decompose in landfills, they release harmful methane emissions. SB 1383 aims to reduce the environmental effects of methane emissions resulting from organic materials decomposing in landfills and increase statewide edible food recovery efforts.

What Irvine Company is doing to comply with SB 1383 and reduce organic waste in landfills

The most common types of organic waste in the workplace include food waste and green (landscaping) waste. Here’s what we’re doing to divert both types of waste from California landfills.

  • Ensuring all of our on-site cafes participate in our food composting program
  • Recycling green (landscaping) waste — approximately 40,000 tons annually across our workplace portfolio — into mulch
  • Working with local jurisdictions and waste haulers to provide organic waste collection services to our workplaces and with local vendors to provide exterior trash, recycling and food waste bins throughout our workplaces
  • Giving our customers the option to add a separate bin for food waste to their in-suite trash cans
  • Providing our customers, employees and contractors with educational information about SB 1383 requirements and how to properly sort waste

Thank you in advance for your efforts to comply with State Senate Bill 1383.
